Advanced wound care is a rapidly growing area of
specialization in the United States . The recent advances in the
development of various topical agents, dressings and methods for applying
state of the art tissue grafts are dramatic. Physicians now have the tools
necessary to offer patients suffering with difficult to heal wounds a
rapid return to a pain-free lifestyle.
The Center for Advanced Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine at Wyckoff
Heights Medical Center is dedicated to the promotion of wound healing and
to returning patients to the best possible quality of life. Our highly
trained staff uses a multidisciplinary approach to ensure that patients
have access to the broad range of services they need to facilitate their
wound healing. One of our primary goals is to exceed national wound
healing rates and, in the process, preserve the continuity of care between
the referring physician and the patient.
Patients with particularly difficult or complex soft
tissue problems may benefit from adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy
is
administered via several monoplace chambers and promotes wound healing not
just by increasing levels of dissolved oxygen in the body but also by
inducing certain changes at the cellular level that contribute to blood
vessel formation. Indications for adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen
therapy include:
- Necrotizing fasciitis and severe soft tissue
infections
- Non-healing chronic diabetic foot ulcers
- Chronic osteomyelitis
- Acute vascular thrombosis
- Osteoradionecrosis of the mandible and
prophylaxis prior to dental extraction
- Soft tissue radiation injury
- Compromised skin and muscle flaps
- Crush injuries
- Various indications for patients enrolled in
blood management programs
- Less commonly seen carbon monoxide poisoning and decompression
sickness
