The Department of Family, Community and Preventive Medicine at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center is a progressive and dynamic department, committed to providing the highest quality of health care, excellent resident and medical student education and conducting community oriented research. Our mission is to provide community oriented primary care, research and education in a truly urban, multicultural, diverse environment.

Programs and Services

The Department of Family, Community and Preventive Medicine provides comprehensive, continuous health care to patients of all ages. As Family Physicians, we address the medical, psychology and social issues of our patients. We provide care for the individual patient and the entire family, as well as the community. The Department has a wide array of services and programs including the Family Medicine Inpatient Service at WHMC, our community-based family health center, our community oriented research and the department outreach programs.

Comprehensive Continuous Care
Family Physicians provide comprehensive continuous health care to patients of all ages and in virtually all settings, the residents and attending physicians as well as the Medical Students provide care at our LaMarca Family Health Center, The Four Seasons Nursing Home, in the hospital, and with our home visit program. In addition, when necessary and appropriate, the Family Physician may refer our patient to another specialty or subspecialty physician, such as a surgeon or cardiologist. However, your family practice physician will coordinate referrals, lab tests, xrays and any procedures the patient may require.

Health Care for Everyone
As Family Physicians, we provide health care to individuals of all ages from newborns to toddlers, from children to adolescents and from adults to seniors. We provide prenatal care for women, deliver babies and care for the newborns in the nursery at the hospital. We not only care for the individual patient, but we provide this care in the context of the family. Quite often, a family practice physician in our LaMarca Family Health Centers will care for three generations within a single family. It is equally important for the Family Physician while providing care for the patient and the family to take into consideration cultural, language and community issues that impact the individual.

Medical, Psychological, Social Health Care
Physicians at WHMC have a holistic approach to each patient. We discuss and address any medical, psychological and social problems that our patients may be experiencing. In our inner-city, multicultural environment these medical, psychological, and social problems may indeed be quite profound. Your family practice physician is ready and willing to talk with you to help resolve these problems.

Community Based Family Health Centers
Board-certified Family Medicine Attending Physicians, Family Medicine Resident Physicians and Medical Students provide individual and family medical care at the LaMarca Family Heath Center. We provide comprehensive continuous health care for patients of all ages.

Patients are encouraged to schedule an appointment to see their physician. However, "walk-ins" and patients with urgent problems are accommodated on the same day. Appointments are easily obtained and usually scheduled within the same week of which they are requested. Our staff at the Family Health Center consists of very capable and friendly medical assistants. The support staff and physicians speak a wide variety of languages and reflect the cultural and ethnicity of the neighborhoods served.

The LaMarca Family Health Center accepts virtually all types of insurances, managed care plans, Medicaid, Medicare and self-paying patients.

Preventive Medicine

Health Care maintenance, Preventive Medicine and Health Screening is extremely important for every patient and are vital components to the provision of comprehensive health care. For example, it is important to treat a patient for asthma, but it is equally important to help the individual to begin an exercise program, eat correctly and stop smoking.

We not only address the needs of the individual patient (i.e., cancer screening and immunizations), but attempt to respond to health related issues of the communities served (i.e., lead poisoning, substance abuse, domestic violence).

In collaboration with the Department of Community and Preventive Medicine at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in Manhattan, the department offers a residency program in Preventive Medicine. The didactic and academic training transpires at Mt. Sinai while the practicum occurs in the Department of Family, Community and Preventive Medicine at WHMC. Completion of the program leads to a Masters Degree in Public Health as well as eligibility for board certification in general preventive medicine.

Medical Education
Continuing Medical Education, Medical Student Programs and Residency Training are the core of the department's extensive commitment to medical education. With over 25 medical students at any given time, a fully approved (AOA and ACGME) Residency Training Program (18 Family Practice Residents and 3 Preventive Medicine Residents) and daily CME approved programs; the department is intermittently evolved in education.
